Got a Girl Crush: Street Photographer Jill Freedman
Jill Freedman is a New Yorker who’s grit and no-shit-taken-attitude set her up for accessing the most inaccessible (like FDNY and the NYPD) as well as documenting the marginalized and outsiders for the last 40 years. Watch Jill in action in the street photog doc out last year, Everybody Street.
During the 1970s and 1980s, she rode atop fire engines, traded expletives with cops and joined the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus. She patiently gained access and produced books — “Firehouse,” “Circus Days” and “Street Cops.” Long before reality television, those books showed the real inside story.
“They’re all separate little universes,” she said. “And I had to prove myself, more than anyone else, because I’m a woman.” (via NYT)
