Got a Girl Crush On: Ibeyi
Ibeyi (pronounced ee-bey-ee, in the Yoruba language this translates as “twins”) are 20 years old French Cuban twins, Naomi (percussion) and Lisa-Kainde Diaz (piano). They are daughters of the late Cuban percussionist Angà Diaz (of Buena Vista Social Club). Together the twins sing and combine modern pop, hip-hop and electronic influences with the traditional sounds of their father’s Yoruba culture (who were people transplanted from West Africa to Cuba with the 16th-century slave trade).
Their self-titled debut album was just released this past week! They are a haunting pair reminiscent of Björk and Coco Rosie with a stripped-down world-music-meets-techno sound.
